1991 Camaro RS: Street Legal, Stick Shifted, and Bracket Raced

Welcome to George's Home Page

A saga of an on going money pit that I call a hobby. No, make that an expensive hobby!!!
Bought the car new in April, 1991 and have been modifying it ever since.

A word of advice to all: if you're running a stock 3rd or 4th generation F-Body rear diff with a stick shift and sticky tires, IT IS GOING TO BREAK. Mine would last about 12 passes. Get a 9 inch Ford or 12 bolt Chevy diff. Don't bother spending money on the 7 1/2 or 7 5/8 inch rear to beef it up. It still won't live.

The Build Sheet......

The 305 had the stock bottom end and heads. After experimenting with TBI fuel injection, a Crane CompuCam, a Paxton supercharger, using a MSD 6AL and 2-step and 4.10 gears, I ditched the FI and Paxton and installed an Erson 280, 220 @ .050", .472" lift hydraulic cam, JR full length headers (1 5/8"), an Edelbrock Performer intake and 600 Holley double pumper. With a 10 1/2 inch 2800# Ram Borg & Beck pressure plate, Ram-metallic disk, and Hayes 30# flywheel, connecting a Richmond 6 speed with 3.01/1.88/1.46/1.19/1.00/0.62 gears, and a Moser 9 inch Ford with 4.57 gears and a Detroit Locker, the 305 ran a best eighth mile of 8.26 @ 85.50 mph

Then I finished building the 355.....

It was built with a splayed 4 bolt main block, Chevy steel crank, shotpeened, magnafluxed, polished, and bushed stock rods, TRW forged pistons (9.76:1), Childs & Albert ZGTF rings, Crane 280/288, 244/252 @ .050", .518"/.536" lift solid cam, Moroso 7 quart pan with crank scraper and windage screen, and a Melling high volume oil pump. I topped it with Canfield aluminum heads that have 200cc ports and 2.10/1.60 valves, Cam Dynamics roller rockers, Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake, and an 800 Holley double pumper. Exaust is handled by Hooker Super Comp 1 3/4 inch headers and 3 inch duals with Flowtech Afterburner mufflers and some homemade cutouts. I installed a 5 point roll bar and 5 point harness. Also had to upgrade the clutch to a Ram 2800# Long style pressure plate with a Hayes Superconnector disk to hold it. And hold it did, until it chucked the pinion out of the 9 inch.

More upgrades, more money.....

I installed a Moser nodular center, Daytona pinion support, and 4.86 gears after breaking the rear diff. Later I added a Griffin aluminum radiator and an Aerospace Components electric water pump to keep it cool. To date this combo has ran a best eighth mile of 7.183 @ 99.86 mph (updated 5/18/02), while it still had A/C, power steering, power brakes, and power windows plus it gets 15.8 mpg on the highway thanks to the 0.62 overdrive. I just ditched the power steering, A/C, and heater. We'll see soon if that helps along with the addition of new slicks, 90/10 Lakewood drag struts(front, 50/50 Lakewood drag shocks(rear), and a 3000# Ram diaphram pressure plate with a Ram-metallic disk. Also, had to go back to a 4.57 gear to kill a little torque off the line and added BMR LCAR's and Extreme drag race anti-sway bar, Random Torque Arm, and Spohn adjustable LCA's to get the car to hook better.

Not many people bracket race stick cars, but this one usually sees one or two races a month during the season. I race in the Pro and Super Pro classes at my local tracks. I use a Wilwood master cylinder, CNC push type adjustable slave cylinder, and McLeod line launch system on the clutch, triggered by a TAG Systems digital delay box to even things up a bit. After leaving the line, the shifting is all up to me and the 6600 rpm chip in the MSD shift light. I've had two second place finishes, and made it to quarter finals many times. Just bought a new trailer March, 2003. Also, I sent the mainshaft to Liberty High Performance to have 2nd gear pro-shifted, new synchros in 3rd though 6th, and a non torque-lock slider in 3rd and 4th. After 8 years of pounding, the tranny needed freshening up anyway. Talk about slick shifting. Update: Finally won a race at K-D Dragway on August 23, 2003. Stick cars rule. If someone tells you they're not consistent, the car ran 7.327 to 7.344 all through eliminations. Yeehaw!!!!
